Robert L.E. Egger President, DC Central Kitchen, Inc.
Robert Egger is the Founder and President of the DC Central Kitchen, where unemployed men and women learn marketable culinary skills while donated food is converted into balanced meals. Since opening in 1989, the DCCK has distributed over 22 million meals and helped 800 men and women gain full-time employment.
Egger has been on the Non Profit Times “50 Most Powerful and Influential Nonprofit Leaders” list in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was the recipient of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington’s 2007 “Lifetime Achievement” award and the 2004 James Beard Foundation “Humanitarian of the Year” award. He has also been named an Oprah Angel, a Washingtonian of the Year, a Point of Light and one of the Ten Most Caring People in America, by the Caring Institute. He is also a 14-gallon blood donor to the American Red Cross.
Shannon Sedgwick Davis Partner, Bridgeway Charitable Trust
Shannon Sedgwick Davis is a partner at Bridgeway Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Bridgeway Capital Management, Inc. The Houston-based investment firm commits one-half of its annual profits to philanthropic endeavors that combat genocide while promoting peace, reconciliation, and human rights around the world.
Davis previously served as vice president of Geneva Global, an organization that invests in developing-world communities, and as director of public affairs at International Justice Mission (IJM), a human-rights organization that works to end slavery, forced prostitution, and illegal land seizures in the developing world. During her tenure at IJM,
Davis organized the 2002 Olympics Sex Trafficking Briefing. She also conducted high-level briefings for White House staff, members of Congress, and leading human rights activists. Her work was featured in the Emmy-winning Dateline segment “Children for Sale.” Ms. Davis has spent a significant amount of time traveling abroad working to free children from brothels and slavery.
She is on the advisory board for the Elders, a collective group of world leaders—including Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Muhammad Yunus, and Desmond Tutu—assembled to contribute their wisdom and integrity to tackling some of the world’s toughest problems. Ms. Davis is an honors graduate of McMurry University and Baylor Law School.
POVERTY SUMMIT + CAMPUS KITCHENS PROJECT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Baylor University’s 3rd Annual Poverty Summit will be held October 8-10, 2010 in conjunction with The Campus Kitchens Project. The conference is entitled Hungry for Justice: Social, Economic, Environmental.
Hungry for Justice is a national conference addressing poverty and issues of social justice. A variety of social concerns will be addressed, with a strong focus on issues stemming from poverty such as hunger and human trafficking. The conference aims to stimulate academic thought and raise awareness about poverty; engage students about the issues of social, economic, and environmental justice; and encourage action.
Outside of Baylor and the Waco community, The Campus Kitchens Project will send students from its 26 affiliated colleges and universities, giving this conference a truly national audience. We are delighted to announce confirmed keynote speakers include Robert Egger, Founder and President of DC Central Kitchen and Shannon Sedgwick Davis, a prominent anti-human trafficking advocate involved in several reconciliation and global human rights endeavors. Davis sits on the advisory board for The Elders, a collective group of international leaders including Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and President Jimmy Carter who meet to discuss difficult issues such as the five-year genocide in Darfur. We have received interest from organizations such as OasisUSA, Texas Hunger Initiative, Urban Gardening Coalition, TOMS Shoes, Compassion International, and the Capital Area Food Bank about leading possible breakout sessions, and the call for proposals is now available online. The conference will also include a food justice panel discussion addressing issues ranging from labor trafficking in agriculture production to food access and nutrition.
Because the conference addresses issues of social, economic, and environmental justice we have been intentional about using fair trade products for all conference materials. Each participant will receive a bracelet purchased from the Kianga Project, which was started by Baylor graduates who returned from Kenya with the goal to economically empower women living with HIV. The four students sell fair trade goods so that the women may build sustainable futures for themselves and their families, and we are excited to join this effort.
Registration is $40, and the tentative schedule, hotel accommodations, and travel information are available at www.baylor.edu/povertysummit. If you are interested in presenting at the conference, complete the request for proposal online by September 10, 2010, and if you are interested in attending, make sure to register by October 1, 2010.
